Paint It Before You Eat It

I have an online gallery at Daily Paintworks and someone is always offering a challenge to paint. This challenge was presented by Carol Marine before Valentine's Day and you could paint from her photo or provide something of your own. I decided to paint from her photo and the only downside I didn't get to eat the goodies after I finished painting it this afternoon and gosh, darn, those little pleated papers were hard to paint. Many of the posted challenges were so much better than mine but that's the fun to see the other painters interpretation and I probably would have never chosen anything with a little frilly paper to start with. Want to give your art journey a stretch? Come try a challenge with us and you don't have to be a member to join in a challenge and there are no deadlines...so now, will you submit to the challenge? Just play fair and paint it after the challenge has been given. Happy Painting.

This painting has large chunks of color on the linen. I blocked in the paint with my palette knife, giving the tulips a very distorted look. The light was bright at the Arboretum when I took a photograph of a beautiful field of tulips. I zoned in on the colors and shapes, painting only what I saw....not what I thought I saw. This painting was commissioned by a local interior designer for her own home.
She met with me and explained that she wanted two pieces that would hang
side by side in the staircase of her beautiful home.
We discussed the palette, general composition and general
"feel" of the painting.
My client mentioned liking the abstract quality of my work and she also had noticed
that I often left some underpainting showing through and liked that.
In other areas, she wanted thicker paint (thus the PALETTE KNIFE!)
Anyway...... we worked together, meeting several times and here is the first painting!

This painting is exciting (to me). I love the color harmony. It's a new technique I discovered by accident - I'm always experimenting you know. Usually I'm very open about my techniques, but I'm going to be stingy about this one.
I might present it to my workshop artists. Right now I'm too enthralled with it to share.

I noticed that on my iPad, the image at the top of this post looked too dark. Above is a lighter version. Variations in monitors makes it hard to judge how much light/dark to have on the photo, especially on a painting done with metallic paints.
This is an original abstract impasto oil painting that measures 11 x 14 unframed. The painting was done with glazing, heavy impasto, and palette knife techniques. It depicts Columbine in a wild flower garden that is crazy with flowers.
